Marlisa Sailer
StyleForHire.com StylistThis week marks the debut of Style for Hire, a nationwide network of stylists’—each one handpicked by Stacy London, the irreverent-yet-lovable star of TLC’s What Not to Wear—to help women clean out their closets, rediscover their style, and live a happier life through fashion. One of those stylists is Marlisa Sailer, but Marlisa is far from just a stylist. She studied mathematics and earned a business certificate from Indiana University; she got a second degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she focused on illustration in the apparel design program (her commercial illustrations can be found on products from luggage tags to lipstick cases to direct mail brochures). Essentially, she has achieved the perfect balance of left and right brain that the rest of us perpetually strive for. She talks beauty and brains for this week’s spotlight.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: My style evolves as I do; I love to experiment and explore my style. [Some] days I gravitate towards an artsy minimalist style, and other days I’m ethereal bohemian.
Q: Does your personal style effect how you style others?
A: It’s irrelevant. My clients’ style is about them, their personalities, bodies, lifestyles, and so on. I listen to their needs and use my understanding of fit, silhouette and aesthetics to define their style.
Q: Do you have a fashion icon?
A: I can’t name just one. I love seeing people make choices that are infused with personality. I see some of my favorite fashion on the street.
Q: How about a beauty icon?
A: My mom, and Diane Keaton. They are spunky, gorgeous and natural.
Q: What is the best beauty tip your mom ever gave you?
A: She has beautiful skin, so I take cues from her: keep your skin clean and moisturized, hydrate, and eat your salmon!
Q: Good advice! You stay very busy with all your different endeavors, but if you had a few weeks off, what would you do?
A: Take a cross-country vintage shopping trip with a GIANT trunk.
Q: And pick up..?
A: I am currently obsessed with jade jewelry and mid-century furniture.
Q: Very cool. Finally, what was your reaction to getting picked to be a part of the Style for Hire program?
A: I was so excited to be a part of this opportunity. I see the benefits of styling—it is something that uplifts and improves the lives and confidence of people. Who doesn’t want that?
