MusicianFor Devin Star Tailes—more commonly know as Dev, the uniquely electronic voice behind you-just-have-to-dance tracks like “Like a G6,” “Bass Down Low,” and “Dancing in the Dark”—a career as a musician was not always in the cards. In fact, it was on a whim that, while attending junior college and working at Old Navy, she decided to post some Garage Band recordings on her MySpace page in 2008. Music producers The Cataracts got wind of the songs, met with Dev, and the rest is hip-hop history. Since then, her style has evolved along with her music (good-bye, Old Navy!), and now she’s a brand ambassador for Calvin Klein’s new ck one color cosmetics line. Before she takes the Lollapalooza stage on Friday evening, she’ll be meeting fans for an appearance at Ulta Beauty—and we can’t wait to see what boundary-pushing beauty look she’ll be rocking. Oh, and check out the The G&F Blog for a chance to win a pass to meet Dev at Ulta. She let us in on her favorite products from the new ck one line and gave us a preview of her Lolla look for this week’s Spotlight.

Q: What inspires your music?
A: My music style is very electronic based but I like to pull from different genres.I had a lot of inspirations for my debut album: I was listening to a lot of Drake and Radiohead, which are two opposite ends of the spectrum. I’m inspired whether it’s from country or from hip-hop—I like to pull them all together but create a sort of electronic sound.
Q: What about your style—does music inspire that?
A: I’m such an inspiration junky, and I change my mind almost every day. It can be stuff on the street. I live in downtown Los Angeles so it’s really fun for me to do all of my styling and music down there. I like blogs, books, certain foods; I will pull inspiration from anything—that’s the fun of being able to create. I express myself through my clothes and makeup every day. As a woman, that’s an awesome feeling.
Q: What is your philosophy on beauty?
A: Freedom of self-expression is a beautiful thing; and beauty is a great tool for that. Whether I’m in a bright mood or a dark mood, whether I feel sexy or fearless, make up definitely helps me play it up.
Q: Can you give us any hints on your look for Lollapalooza?
A: My signature make-up looks are a heavy cat eye and red lip, or a sexy smokey eye look—using the ck one powder eyeshadow quad in smoking. I will probably do some variation of one of these looks.
Q: Speaking of Lollapalooza, who are you excited to see play?
A: I can’t wait to see Santigold!
