JARED VAN CAMP HAS NEVER ONCE COMPLAINED ABOUT EATING HIS GREENS—AND IT SHOWS!
Does your green juice face look a lot like your Malort face? Never fear, we recruited Jared Van Camp of Owen + Alchemy—the hottest juice bar in all the land—to teach us a fool-proof juice recipe that packs the most the punch. Start your mornings green (and deliciously smiling!) with this recipe that’s sure to give the energy you need to conquer your day.
“It’s got a lot of health benefits—the coconut is really good for your skin, and the kale provides a ton of vitamins to get you going at the beginning of the day,” explain Jared. “ And to top it all off, it tastes delicious!” OWEN + ALCHEMY, 2355 N. MILWAUKEE AVENUE
WE’RE MIXING IT UP WITH HENRY’S SWING CLUB’S MICHAEL RUBEL
We’re getting schooled in spirits with Henry’s Swing Club partner Michael Rubel. We asked Michael to mix up the Boulevardier—the Negroni’s long-lost autumnal cousin—a whiskey cocktail to keep in your arsenal so you can whip up something rich and intriguing every time.
“Whether it’s to console oneself after a rough day, or it’s the third date and she came back to your place, to be able to mix a quality drink means you’ve grown up.” explains Michael. “You’re a man of some substance and hidden talents.”
Some tips from Michael, you ask? He replies: Old school rules say start with your least expensive ingredients first. And it’s also nice to build, when possible from smallest to largest measurement. After adding the ice, stir until the drink is cold and diluted by 20% or so. Cut a swath of orange peel with a bit of pith, enough so it stays sturdy in your hand—express the oils over the top of the drink. The riper the orange the less oil it possesses. A nice hard navel orange with flecks of green is ideal here. HENRY’S SWING CLUB, 18 W. HUBBARD
NEW FAVORITE MEN’S PRODUCTS? ONE WORD: YES.
The perfect shave doesn’t only mean a hairless face, but instead includes the right finesse and products to leave skin as soft as a baby’s bottom. Tucked away in the Cowshed Spa of the new Soho House Chicago, the men’s retreat is a hidden gem that we’re happy to share. We’re dishing with its barber, Frank O’Connor, who teaches us the art of shaving—from graceful brush strokes to the harmonious graze of the blade. As a 3rd generation barber, Frank has an old school, no nonsense approach to shaving and facial maintenance. Along with his step-by-step shave guide, Frank is also serving up two of his essential products from the Neville line at Soho House Chicago.
So what does Frank swear by from the Neville line? The Neville Rescue Scrub which he urges to use every other day to prepare surface of skin for a cleaner shave. It also removes dead skin cells with volcanic ash and softens with cocoa butter. His second favorite? Neville Shave Oil. He suggests to use after the Rescue Scrub when shaving to soften the beard and add a protective layer of skin between you and the blade.
“Everytime you shave you are removing a layer of skin, so it’s important to add that layer back into your routine. It also prevents razor bumps and ingrown hairs,” Frank says. Well said, Frank. WHEN MARK BEIER TALKS FITNESS: WE LISTEN.
A gentleman always has five minutes for a quick workout and morning sweat. We’re getting you trained with fitness guru, Mark Beier, on this everyday program you can do anywhere. As founder of Mark Bars and co-director of training of Shred415, Mark knows a thing or two about creating time-friendly workouts that challenge the core, create flexibility and stimulate a good amount of calorie burn. Watch Mark go through each of the five workouts below and read on to learn his dos and don’ts of technique.
While he has a lot of Do’s and Don’ts—we’re really fascinated by his final statement that sums up his workout mentality: “It’s easy to push it hard at the beginning and then slack off at the end, the question is if you can sustain a constant, challenging tempo the entire 60 seconds.” It’s on, Mark.
