Mar 13, 2014 >> Get The Look: Beauty Trends Inspired by our Favorite Divas
The temps are slowly rising—we say this with as much optimism as possible!—and we’re exploring things to do in the city. We included one of our favorite activities in our March Musings + Perusings guide—record hunting—and while hunting from some vinyl treasures, we found some great album covers to get inspired for some groovy spring beauty looks.
We asked beauty maven Andrea Samuels to give us a modern take on these vintage gems. Andrea breaks down the look for each diva and gives us the tools we need to channel our inner prima donna. The result? Three ways to to change up your beauty routine and have fun while doing it! She shares tips for our favorite trends below:
ALBUM: MADONNA TRUE BLUE
TREND: BLUE EYESHADOW
Pop culture in the 80’s was very huge for neon makeup, fresh music and showing off your individuality by any means necessary. The Queen of Music, Madonna, was the leader of the pack for setting trends. This season pastels and bright blues are making a comeback.
With bright blue on the eyes of new “It Girl” Lupita N’yongo and pastel blues and greens on the runway of Dior at Paris Fashion Week, one thing is certain: Blue is trending! I recommend pastel shades for ivory to beige skin tones. Women of color can alternate this trend using bright, neon shades of blues like Lime Crime eyeliner in “Lazuli” and “Blue Milk.”
Go bold by pairing your bright eyes with a bright lip or tone it down with a nude lip.

ALBUM: LIZA MINNELLI LOVE PAINS
TREND: STRONG ARCHES
Just coming from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I saw first hand natural eyebrows are making a come back. Designers like Rebecca Minkoff and Versace were showing the arches some love this season and paying homage to the original Brow Diva: Liza Minnelli. To mimic this nostalgic style, try out Smashbox this spring.
For thin brows, I highly recommend using the chunky “Tech To Go” brow filling pencil to pump it up a notch. For the individual with naturally gorgeous eyebrows, try out Smashbox “Brow Tech Trio” to enhance and highlight your best feature.
Once your brows are complete, you can keep your makeup minimal or go with a bold lip so your brows are front and center.

ALBUM: DIANA ROSS ELECTRIC SILK
TREND: LIP SERVICE
“I’m Coming Out!” and letting you know exactly what you need this season: glossy, sassy lips like The Boss, Diana Ross.
Designers like J.Crew and Alice and Olivia followed suit by presenting refreshing, cherry red lips down the runway. Here are my top three lip product choices that compliment all skin tones: NARS lip gloss in “Babe” is a sheer orange-red gloss for the shy girl that wants a little va-va-voom for her kisses. Tom Ford lipstick in “Narcotic Rouge” for the girl looking for intense color, but not too much gloss. Givenchy Gloss Interdit in “#12 Rouge Passion” for the bold woman who wants her lips to look like red glass jet-setting from work to dinner.
Whatever you choose, make sure your lips stand out by keeping your eyes clean with mascara or a just a thin, line of eyeliner will do.
1. Lip Gloss in Babe $25 at NARS // 2. Gloss Interdit Ultra-Shiny Color in #12 Rouge Passion $30 by Givenchy
