BEAUTY INSIDER: ISABEL LEONARD. The face and voice of an angel? You must be talking about Isabel Leonard. The NY-based opera singer just pulled in town for her debut with the Lyric Opera starring as Rosina in The Barber of Seville. The well-bred performer, who recently won the coveted Tucker Award, is no stranger to the beautiful things on and off stage and we spent a few minutes with the starlet to talk shop.
G&F: You have arrived in Chicago during the coldest time of the year (and in history!), how do you battle the winter months?
Isabel Leonard: It’s so dry here in Chicago and at home in New York in the winter! I use only warm water to wash my face and skin. The secret? Stay healthy! Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and cover your face as much as possible in the bitter cold.
G&F: How do you keep a fresh face while in production?
IL: I routinely wash my face right after a show is over and use moisturizer immediately. The day following a performance, I apply very little make up to give my skin a breather!
G&F: What products are must-haves while traveling from city to city?
IL: The one thing I cannot live without is a tiny jar of good old Vaseline that I have with me at all times for my lips. Nothing keeps my lips healthy like it!
G&F: Finish the sentence: For Beauty, 2014 is all about …
IL: … Remembering that a big smile will look good no matter how your make up appears that day! // THE BARBER OF SEVILLE OPENS FEBRUARY 1 AT THE LYRIC OPERA. PURCHASE TICKETS AT LYRICOPERA.ORG/BARBER.

BEAUTY INSIDER: SHANNON O’BRIEN. Inquiring minds want to know! So who does the pop princess of Chicago beauty Shannon O’Brien trust to do her make up when she’s not doing it herself? Rommy Najor, of course. We asked Shannon her top beauty picks—take notes, ladies. MANI & PEDI: Juko Nail Salon; NAIL ART: Spifster; MASSAGE: Ruby Room; CUT & COLOR: AJ Schulz, Thomas West Salon; CHICAGO GIRL CRUSH: Jewelry designer Laura Lombardi & Atelier Azza’s Azeeza Khan. She adds: “Azeeza and Laura are two bad bitches killing the game in their perspective field and looking fly while doing it.” Our kind of gals. // SEE MORE OF SHANNON AT CHEAPFRILLSANDTHRILLS.COM

PUCKER UP! Meet the face of the new finishing salon—Pucker NYC. The makeup-only studio in the heart of SoHo opens next month providing women a perfect place to discover a brand new look for [fill-in-the-blank-occasion]. So where did it get its start? Pucker is the brainchild of beauty-savvy business woman Hiyam McKelvey who knew exactly who to team up with to build the brand. Meet make up veteran Julio Sandino, Pucker’s Creative Director and co-founder, who has worked practically ever major runway show from Anna Sui to Vivienne Westwood. We catch a few minutes with him before the boutique opens.
G&F: Favorite beauty trends of the season?
Julio Sandino: Dewy skin, a red lip and a bold brow are the key features every woman should be trying this season
G&F: After getting a service done at Pucker, where should we go?
JS: There’s an amazing Mexican restaurant around the corner called La Esquina—the margaritas are to die for! For dinner, I recommend Isola Trattoria in the Mondrian SoHo Hotel.
G&F: Your three never-leave-home-without items. GO!
JS: Pucker Rain Lip treatment. Jo Malone grapefruit cologne. Evian water mist.

COVERGIRL—CHICAGO EDITION. Think you got the chops to make it in the modeling biz? Mario Tricoci is launching another edition of their popular Mario, Make Me a Model series. The Top Model-esque competition looks for raw talent in the Chicago area to come be the face of the sassy Chicago-based salon. We looked to 2012 finalist Birgit Dalgaard—one of our favorites!—to help shed some advice to 2014 hopefuls. Her three nuggets of wisdom prove to be pretty powerful to start off the new year—even if you plan on not entering the competiton:
ONE / Be Confident! Trust who you are and know that you deserve to be there. Self-assurance shines through.
TWO / Be Yourself! If you’re nervous, that’s okay. Don’t let your nerves hide your unique personality.
THREE / Feel Beautiful! Wear that outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks. If you feel good, others will know it. // MODEL CASTINGS BEGIN FEBRUARY 24TH THROUGH FEBRUARY 26TH. FOR INFORMATION ON THE MARIO, MAKE ME A MODEL CASTINGS, VISIT TRICOCI.COM/M4
BROWS IT GOIN’? We’ve always had girl crush on brow master Kelley Baker whose work we’ve seen on True Blood and Game of Thrones. The bubbly brow beauty ‘s eponymous line of brow-based goods is a perfect start to get the artist in your home. So what’s Kelley’s product of choice? Her Magic Stick highlighter pencil—also known as the “Hallelujah Stick.” And she really loves her brow powder. She waxes poetic: “It’s amazingly easy to use. Tapping the angle brush into the velveteen brow powder and filling in the places on my eyebrows is a relaxing, joyful time of the morning for me. I liken it to the pleasure one gets when they cut flowers from their garden.” Our takeaway: We’ve got to get our hands on this miracle powder. // SHOP AT KELLEYBAKERBROWS.COM

NEW, NOTEWORTHY + CONTINUING INFATUATIONS. Intoxicating color and irresistible scent. The combination for Revlon’s new line of scented nail lacquers is taking us back to our scratch and sniff days. From Lavender Soap to African Tea Rose, there are 19 color + scent combos that will enchant any child at heart. The only negative side we foresee? It may look like you’re constantly smelling your fingers. #Ewww. On the other side of the perfume spectrum, Frederic Malle’s collaboration with Liberty of London has inspired us to re-wallpaper every room in our house. The collection of 18 diverse prints for his fragrances has left a chin mark on our table. Our favorite is the Dorothy Draper-esque Lipstick Rose. // REVLON PARFUMERIE SCENTED NAIL ENAMEL, $5.99 EACH, AT ULTA and FREDERIC MALLE x LIBERTY OF LONDON LIPSTICK ROSE

The lightly tinted formula makes for no white “chalkiness” in your hair like other dry shampoos. Adding a soft hint of fragrance, this G&F favorite adds incredible volume while eliminating oil. And for $8.99 a bottle, this is one economic indulgence worth repeating.

SPONGE LOVE! Clean, fresh skin thanks to a sponge? Yes. And Leah Chavie’s got them. These tiny miracle workers—made from the root of the konjac plant from Asia—work deep into your pores to dislodge the muck. And with 20 years experience in the industry, Leah knows a thing or two about clean skin! To use, soak the sponge in warm water, apply a small amount of your favorite cleanser, and work into a lather while massaging your face in a circular motion. The result?
