ANNE OWEN + JARED VAN CAMP are bringing sexy back—to the primarily hippie-centric juicing culture, that is. Joining forces with their respective talents—Anne as a powerhouse publisher who has immersed herself in the health and beauty industry, and Jared as the culinary wunderkind behind spots like Nellcôte and Old Town Social—they’ll open OWEN + ALCHEMY this spring: a sophisticated, progressive and high-design juice bar.
“Outsiders still think of Chicago as just steak and potatoes,” Jared says. “Nothing could be further from the truth.” Anne agrees: “The tides are turning. People are becoming more conscious of what they’re eating, and are seeking out healthier options,” she says. For Jared, that shift happened when it became necessary in order to keep his type 1 diabetes in control; for Anne, it was when she needed a way to balance out her crazy lifestyle as media mogul (which involved lots of hearty meals entertaining clients).
The new spot doesn’t have a location just yet, but the design will be stylish and sleek—much like the founders themselves. “I blame my time spent in NYC for the fact that I feel most comfortable in black,” says Anne, who describes her style as minimalist yet edgy à la Rick Owens. “Fashion is really all about confidence,” Jared says. “I would argue that health and beauty have a similar underlying motif.”
OWEN + ALCHEMY IS SLATED TO OPEN SPRING 2014.
