For our Halloween issue, we’re going behind the cauldron with Dana Loia of Dana’s Bakery to talk about her spooktacular candy corn macaron—and a few other Halloweens of past. Not only are Dana’s macarons ridiculously delicious, but the brand oozes a sweet vibe and an inspiring start. Dana wasn’t always a macaron maven. She ditched her career as a photo editor, enrolled in the New York Institute of Culinary Education and opened her NY-based shop to bring her colorful creations to life. Dana’s Bakery brings a unique sensory experience by rethinking the traditional French macaron with an American twist with a comforting sense of nostalgia—think edible glitter, orange creamsicle and s’mores, oh my!

We dish with Dana on playing dress up, her slight candy corn obsession and picking—if she can!—her favorite macaron flavor.

Halloween is around the corner–what’s this year’s get-up?
Everyone is expecting me to be a human macaron. I should start working on my costume.

Okay then, we’ll ask: which one would you dress up as?
Our Birthday Cake Macaron hands down. It is pink and purple tie-dye and covered in edible glitter!

Favorite costume ever?
Peg Bundy. Spandex is so comfy and big red hair is so fun.

Since we’re talking all things dress up–what’s your go-to beauty look for Fall?
Leather everything! My go to look: skinny jeans, white tank top or band t-shirt and my black leather jacket. Strap on a pair of sexy shoes and your outfit goes from day to night.

We love the flavor of the month—tell us about it!
One of my favorite candies, nothing screams Halloween like candy corn. It seemed only natural to create a candy corn macaron as our October flavor of the month. It has a candy corn buttercream and actual piece of candy corn in the center.

Any previous history of candy meltdowns?
Never. I can honestly say I love candy and admit that I eat it all year round—not just on Halloween. I love Halloween because it is the only time of year where eating candy is somewhat acceptable!

How many candy corns can you eat before wanting to throw up?
Impossible. What a waste of perfectly good candy corn.

Can we play favorites? What’s your favorite flavor of your creations?
That’s like saying which child is your favorite. Impossible to answer as I love all my children (i.e. macarons!).  It depends on what mood I am in. Fruity Cereal for breakfast. S’mores or Chocolate Molten when I am having a chocolate craving. And I always love the flavor of the month, because it is seasonal and I know it will only be around for a month!

You’re on a 24/7 sugar rush. What do you love about what you do?
I count my lucky stars everyday. I get to wake up, create and do what I love everyday!
