Ashley MurphyCo-Founder, Neat Method
Ashley Murphy is the epitome of simple chic. Her beauty motto of ‘less is more’ transcends into all aspects of her life; it’s this outlook that is the foundation of her San Fran and Chicago-based organization brand, Neat Method, which she co-founded with her friend Molly Graves. As much as we would like to say that anyone can easily achieve this state of less-is-more zen, the reality is that some people—Ashley among them—are just born with it. (As a child, Ashley got in trouble for cleaning and re-organizing her bedroom too much.) Lucky for us, Ashley developed that pastime into a business that helps others keep a clean, organized home. Neat Method has mastered the art of organization in kitchens, bedrooms, closets, and even messy makeup drawers (see below for tips!), but soon Ashley will be organizing a whole new type of room: a nursery. For this week’s Spotlight, we wrangled some simple chic tips from the mom-to-be just weeks before her due date.

Q: We know you were always interested in organization, but that’s not exactly a college major. How did you get your start?
A: My background is actually in the fitness industry. I worked for several years as an in-home personal trainer and Pilates instructor all over the city of Chicago. It was from working with my clients that I discovered that leading a healthy lifestyle really starts within your home. It’s kind of tough to be motivated to make a healthy meal if the kitchen cabinets are a disaster!
Q: True. But we’re concerned with a much more important room: the closet. Tell us about yours.
A: This one is easy: clothing is color coded by ROY-G-BIV and separated by category (tanks, short sleeve, long sleeve). We always use matching hangers. Special occasion shoes are placed into storage containers—out of the way but easily recognizable when needed. And my personal favorite is my clutch/handbag stand.
Q: What item do you always keep close to the front for easy access?
A: Every morning I wake up and put on my favorite cardigan before heading down for my morning coffee. For the past year I’ve been living in one from Hatch—it is maternity but they market themselves on clothing that you can wear before, during, and after you have a baby bump!
Q: Let’s talk makeup drawer–mine is always a mess! How do you keep yours organized?
A: For starters, I always purge the items I no longer wear or that are expired. Then I keep everything organized in trays. All my makeup fits into one small drawer. Quality favorites are better than a million just okay ones!
Q: Great tip. Now we have to know: do you have a song that puts you in the mood (to organize, that is)?
A: Do I have to admit? ‘As Long as You Love Me.’ There is something about Justin Beiber that can really get you organizing!
